not him but, at least with academics, you tend to develop gaps in your knowledge. it's extremely easy to also skip over problems which is how you learn stem and in general, it's hard to stay motivated long term

at least personally speaking from my experience

Not him either but no matter how conscientious you may be, you need an academic environment and just like an artist it needs to be the focus in your life in all things. Your day job will get in the way since it wont be directly related but you need to get by, materials depending on what you work on can be troublesome to get or extremely expensive, and Im all for intense study but you need colleagues and people on a similar path to check yourself and develop. I really dislike modern schooling but there aren’t really alternatives besides doing whatever you can to get it over with quickly.

As opposed to attending a lecture where the professor gives you a dumbed down version of maybe half a textbook? Reading books is always superior to university "education" which only panders to brainlets.

It might be dumbed down in some classes but then again, you are also spending less time on that particular class compared to self-studying.

There are also things like tests which force you to fill in most of your knowledge gaps. A professor and the academic environment is also helpful.

From the people ive worked with, the only way you can learn a STEM field by yourself is if you build or create something. Thus reality will be the slap in your face if what you create do not work.

But also, people who only study at the university withour ever applying their skills to "real" problems are also at a dis-advantage since you cant really learn how to ride a bicycle by reading books avout it.

Yeah. So first try to figure out what branch of physics you want to learn/ work with and then start a project related to that. When you see that your knowledge isnt enough, read up on that topic. This gives what you learn more context and it will stick better in your head.

You want to learn wehicle dynamics? Build a car or simulate a car in a video game.

You want to learn plasma physics? Build a simple fusion reactor, sputter system or atmospheric plasma torch.

I taught myself my entire physics undergrad degree through self study because I couldn't be fucked going to lectures and couldn't be motivated to read the notes provided. I personally find working out of a textbook much better and have had the complete opposite experience to >>13805475 and had a much more complete understanding of subjects than my peers.

For a £36k cheaper alternative, it already does. I'm at uni atm anyway and unless you get a qualification to do a specialist job (engineer, lawyer, doctor), it isn't worth it since it's just 3-4 years of lecturers converting book chapters (which they normally list) into powerpoint slides.

Only disadvantage is that you are more casual about it since you don't have to cram for an exam, so you can easily skip information unintentionally, but that isn't an issue since most people forget subjects after the exam(+time) anyway, as long as you understand the concept it's cushty

Depends, in my experience there was better understanding of a few things by lecture (when the profesor was highly reputable and trustworthy) . Don't know why.

kek clearly you have not self studied over a long period of time. be honest, can you really study physics everyday, an hour or two a day for something like a year? no external motivations, lol?

dont get me wrong, physics is interesting and all but after a point you simply don't want anything to do with it. even if you're discipline, you will begin to dislike physics. i think the exception here is if physics is everything to you and you have a strong motivation to study it.
