Do statin drugs cause dementia?

My mom is diagnosed with mixed Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia and she’s also prescribed Lipitor. Should we stop the Lipitor? Everything on google is mixed. I’m asking the experts here for the truth.

Yes, actually. Studies have found that statins make alzheimers worse. Alzheimer patients on statins have their cognitive abilities degrade faster and to a more extreme degree than without.

That’s the problem, I can find “studies” on google from both sides. Some studies say statins improve dementia, some studies say they worsen it.

AFAIK statins have some negative effects, possibly to your brain as well. Best bet is to get her to lose weight and get off statins, but if she's fat you're kind of in a no-win situation

another problem is that those more likely to have dementia based on risk factors are also those more likely to be on statins. I wouldn't be surprised if they have some effect on the brain (I think maybe atorva and rosuva cross the BBB), but I don't believe from what I've looked at that they contribute to dementia.
