How close are we to full automation?

As part of my training, I'm being trained on CAD/CAM and CNC machinery and it's becoming clear to me that the level of automation we have in modern machine shops is not even the beginning. We already have mills and lathes machines that can go from raw material stock to arbitrary finished parts while calibrating and managing their own tooling and dealing with errors and imperfections in materials and tools. We have CAM software that can generate extremely complex toolpaths and collision check itself. The machines can inspect and test the parts they make and make adjustments based off that information. What technology do we need that we don't already have to create a facility or network of facilities that could create any part or product you can design in CAD (provided the geometry is possible)?
