I specialize in CFD. Honestly, the field feels pretty much dead these days. Nothing exciting ever happens. All the cool modern developments seem to be in EE, comp science, robotics or biotech.

Abstract
>Computational Fluid Dynamics appears to be poised on the threshold of rapid advances powered by the recent developments in deep machine learning. Deep machine learning will be used to improve the speed, accuracy and, the user-friendliness of CFD software. The applications of CFD will expand beyond the usual aerospace and mechanical/thermal areas to include areas such as biomedical, sport, food processing, environmental, fire safety, buildings ventilation and energy efficiency, and a host of other areas of social relevance. The social benefits are obvious. In short, CFD will become ubiquitous but will be buried inside digital twins/reduced order models so that it is usable by engineers, whereas CFD experts will be more engaged in creating them using high fidelity computations and of course, in extending the application of CFD into diverse areas of human activity.

Machine learning for CFD is the biggest meme ever. You'd have to generate a fuckhuge database for a very specific problem beforehand to realize any benefit.

Optimization is a huge redflag for pseuds. I see kids all the time going on about how to make a more efficient anything (engine, turbine, computer chip, windmill, shoe) but they can't make the simpler versions. Its like they think they can smelt iron but they have never smelt copper, or physics freshmen that have never taken a class on relativity or quantum mechanics sharing their opinions on string theory. This is wrong though.
I go to a uni ranked 40 in the UK and some of my professors are always getting funding from private companies to research stuff for them. I doubt these guys are in the top 5% of their field.

I have used ansys fluent too. Fucking hate it because it is so clunky. Takes forever to do any decent meshing because the program barely uses your CPU. Student version also sucks and has a meshing limit.

Yea ran into the meshing limit thing, was quite annoying. My model was quite simple I thought but had to go back to the model program constantly to re-mesh it
I heard you can do CFD computations on Abaqus aswell which we used for FEM computations
