when you had to walk from a village to another, you eventually trampled a path, increasing your speed, just like using a horse. but before you can use a stage coach you need an actual road first. later the road needs to be replaced with one that can support a car. you get the idea. right now we have launch pads on earth and nothing on mars.
what we need is a landing strip on mars to make efficient use of the little aerodynamics the planet offers, and most likely a starting base on our moon. we can send single use high cost pioneers all we want but to make traveling to mars no different to traveling to the new world after 1492, we need to make the infrastructure to support it, harbors, docks, settlements.
