It's not his PhD candidacy, but that he comes from a family which is steeped within academia. Have you ever met an average PhD candidate today? They're morons who think the shit they study does not stink.

I once saw a PhD defense where the candidate was asked, "Why did you decide to do X?" And she said (of course, she), "It's in the literature, so it works."
