Insulin is extremely affordable and its made by multiple generic drug makers in the US alone. The patent controversy is a lie since they expired like 40 years ago. What is patented is fancier newer versions of insuline but anything that existed 20 years ago is not protected. No, making a tiny change and applying for a new patent does not protect the older slightly different version.

Basically our health care system is a farce. The companies that make insulin charge whatever the market can ever. So they can charge whatever price they want. Our medicare program is not legally allowed to bargain overpriced. If they could the price would be way lower.
