Hey /sci/, I need some advice on possible careers with a degree in pure mathematics. I'm currently doing my undergrad in Canada but am looking to move to the US or Europe. I might be interested in academia but it's extremely pozzed at the moment and I don't think it will get better any time soon.

Not as good as a degree in computer science or stats or something, but you should still be eligible for most jobs like consultant, data analyst, etc. If you're majoring in pure math, though, it'd probably because you like pure math, so if you really want a job where you can apply that passion, academia is probably the way to go.

If you want to do pure math for a living you need to join the academia rat race. Also look into getting a masters in math in Europe if you want to move there. Aim for the best universities in Europe (Oxford,Cambridge,ETH)

I've taken a couple of python/R/data science/stats courses if that helps. What other electives/minors would you recommend I take?

I have that in mind, which ones do you think are relatively easy to get into + have a pretty good program/rep?

I quit after 2nd year math undergrad so take it with a grain of salt (I study a lot of computer science and programming in autodidact since). But if you abosultely want to do pure math and have application with it, when in graduate level, choose something the side of discrete maths, because a lot of it find applications in informatics.

For example, obviously number theory relates to cryptography, but otherwise, graph theory is really really important in compilers and interpreters. Look out how a compiler works, and how the optimizing part works. (Static Single Assignment, Control Flow Graph, etc)

Yeah I'm definitely going to specialize in number theory but programming is hard for me to do so i would prefer a more mathy career like data science/quant etc. Dropping out isn't an option for me but before going to grad school I want to have some work experience so I won't be getting a master's straight out of undergrad

One thing to add also. When I was 1st and 2nd year undergrad, I was really troubled by the fact that I had no idea to the applications of what we were doing. But probably all maths areas have applications, so no worry, continue.

Obviously, though I didn't realise at the time, is that analysis/calculus is absolutely massive in physics for the simple fact that all the fundamental equations of each physics domain is a diffential equation. But there are probably other areas where it is useful like in statistics/proba.

Also, for the applications of logic, look out for SAT/SMT, automated theorem prover and proof of programs. Proof of programs is becoming more and more a big thing. On the internet they talk mosty about websites and shit. But what they didn't talk about in terms of software is the all software that are life-critical or is in very expensive equipment. Like the software that run a commercial airplane, a fighter aircraft, programs for the brakes of your car, surgical equipment, etc..

Numerical analysis is also big, group theory in chemistry,

I don't know what your experience is in programming but it is frankly really not complicated for the most stuff.
I also followed a C tutorial when math student at uni and quit it because I hadn't any personal project and it C is not the first language one should learn.

Install linux, learn bash (you can know most of what is useful in 2-3 days). It's all about text manipulation (which makes you learn the basic programming concepts). And you do it to optimize simple taks.
Then learn python or perl

I already use linux lol. I know some basic shell scripting and text manipulation with vim/emacs and will be taking python for ML next semester

realistically how much time will it take me to get to a phd? I've heard it is very hard especially in math as you go to the masters and doctorate level

this is super interesting... I've never heard of proof of programs before, do you have any resources that I could start with? What kinds of jobs does one use it in?

PhD programs in general are difficult compared to a BS or MS level. Get ready to commit 4 or more years after a BS to complete it. If you’re thinking that’s too long then your mind is not in the right space to take on something like that.

Perhaps algorithms and data structures in addition to the ones you have listed( I know math programs here that require it but I don't know about Canada) Other than that just focus on internships in your desired area.

Regarding your uni choice. From the ones I have listed ETH Zürich is the least selective out of the three and still has a world class academic reputation. Furthermore the university does not have high tuition unlike cambridge and oxford who charge you and arm and a leg. It's also well connected with top US universities so you might get to spend some time there if you have the right network and grades.
