is this normal, chemistry majors? Hell, is this normal for all sciences? I am a software engineer and they require you to take either chemistry 1 or physics 2. thought a first year course would be easier, but ive heard almost all averages for science courses are in the low 70s at best.

i got a math degree, took chem 1 as a freshman. got a B in the class despite never showing up to class or turning in homework, even skipped my lab so much i almost failed that. idk why they complain so much, like yeah its mind-numbingly boring but not hard.

it just is strange to me that the actual chemistry majors (who even for chemistry 1 have already taken a course or two, like intro to chem) are the ones struggling so hard. i am a senior just fulfilling a requirement, and many of them in there are sophmores so it cant just be that theyre just freshman messing up.

i had a cute girl tell me she got a 55. she said she was majoring in organic chemistry. HOW?

Yes, Chemistry majors are really retarded. They are basically the lowest quality STEM students who made the minimum bar to be above humanities, but didn't get in to a good degree programme. In Chemical Engineering we had a OChem 2 lab and the professors were unironically shocked that we prepared for the labs, did it without our hands being held and were able to do the simple mass balance calculations for the report. Undergrad chemistry NPCs have no agency to these things. They work hard, they are just clinically retarded. Their professors get so frustrates that they actually begged us to take RAships at the chemistry department over their own students. Chemistry students have a rediculously light curriculum, but they suck even at what little they do.

We also had this convo with one uppity postgrad chem TA (who, like most of them, was trying to transfer to ChemE)

Niggah broke down and almost cried. He literally could not comprehend that the programme he tried so hard to transfer to also contain passionless, lazy people who are just smarter and more talented than him.

Chemists are worthless subhumans and it shows in their low salaries.

most of them are probably not chemistry majors. At my school gen chem 1 was full of B.A. who weren't comfortable with math at all. Most chemistry majors will have already taken ap chem in highschool so they will either bypass gen 1 or be pretty familiar with it. I didn't go to a single general chemistry lecture and got a B in both courses. Lab and practice homework is where the real learning happens. Most science majors didn't start running into trouble until ochem in my experience.

just looked it up, the worst exam we ever had got 18 people passing (most of them just barely) out of 107 registered students in this class.
Average was something like 34/100 points.
Class was called "Mathematische Konzepte II" (mathematical concepts II)

This. Ive only ever had one professor like that though. Statistics 2, he was proud as hell for failing half the class. Not sure how theyre allowed to even keep their jobs if that happens that often

i took "observational astronomy" as an elective because it had a lab where you get to play with a big telescope and the midterm average was 34/80. i lead the class with a 64, but it was all curved and even the midwits were passing. the math was so easy, it was all just simple algebra and plugging numbers into formulas and it was an upper level course too. hopefully my outrageously high scores on the exams in that class lead to at least one midwit dropping out of school.

it depends imo. some professors just make hard exams so even well taught students will struggle to get an 80 or higher. this is especially true in math and mathematical sciences where coming up with new proofs are fair game, and especially if theres a time limit. just put more proof problems than most people can solve in time. really allows professors to see who has actual intelligence and potential, and is a good format for upper div classes where intelligent students need to be sifted out so they can go to grad school or phd programs. these kinda classes should have curves though, so that the students who are meeting the minimum requirements but aren't geniuses still end up with Bs and Cs and not Fs.

however, if the exam is just multiple choice and short answer, low grades should indicate that the students aren't learning all the material.
