yes you can
start messureing how fast your toenails are growing and you are doing science.
you may thing all low hanging fruits are taking but confirming known facts is science as well.

you can also geek out about some small bug or plant that is home to your local area and document everything about it. i'm sure you figure out things nobody ever has seen.

Yes. It's just a matter of how long it would take to understand the concepts and whether or not you like thinking. Since science is about putting abstract things in concrete terms, anyone can read those concrete terms and come away with understanding provided they study the vocabulary carefully
