Why is Europe trying to build more nuclear capacity? Don't they know that the LCOE is so much higher than solar/wind?

It's cleaner, less dangerous (yes it is stop arguing and do your research), more reliable than any other kind of energy. LCOE will o down once the French will get their shit together and find out how to build their new design without fucking it up.
Also it allows Europe to not be dependent on Russia.

Supplement.
Nuclear was the cheapest energy in 2010. The only reason it gets higher is because EDF fucked up the EPR reactors in the UK, France and Finland. It will be cheaper again in 10 years.

Corruption and or subsidizing homegrown capabilities, which ever you prefer. Governments waste tons of money all the time for stuff that isn't efficient but which benefits various interest groups like their own voter base or their industrial friends or what ever. It will cost tax payers billions but the money will also go somewhere which the politicians deem beneficial to their careers. Solar and wind are only some what cheap when they make up a very small percentage of the grid. Where it's only effecting the fuel costs of peaker plants. Once they start effecting operations of base load power plants then they become useless
