Got a serious reply to this? His overall point isn't about recurrence directly, he's arguing that our standard models are "cognitively unstable" due to the BB issue. I'm still mainly interested in the claim that our standard cosmology implies eternal recurrence though.

Referencing experiments means jack shit. Any pseud can reference the photoelectric effect and write a diatribe of nonsense. It's not scientific because it doesn't analyze any new experimental data, it doesn't produce data, and it doesn't produce any hypotheses to test. The fact he talks about string theory at all shows its nonsensical. That's like writing in an essay on the Higgs boson that it doesn't require the Judeo Christian God to explain the Higgs mechanism. That would be evidence enough to dismiss the author since it's irrelevant and just a way to shoehorn pseudoscientific bunk.

let me say something a bit more nuanced.
not every past scientific theory is viewed the same way.

today, despite general relativity having superseded newtonian gravity, we know that newtonian gravity is basically still accurate portrayal of reality

the same cannot be said about things like aether, caloric theory, 4 elements, etc. I think the nonsense spouted by cosmologists will be closer to the aether than newtonian gravity in terms of how wrong it ends up turning out to be.

This is basically my intuition as well and I agree with you, but I'd like to still hear some concrete physical explanation for why Carroll is unjustified here (if he is). Even if I expect our cosmology to change, it's still surprising to me that our most successful current one says something this strange. In particular, it suggests that future cosmologies might be even stranger...

You realize he just woke up one day and thought to himself "I wonder how hard I can troll peer reviewers and still have them publish something" right?
He literally just took the idea from that episode of Futurama where brains try to dominate the universe.

If you don't believe in le soul then it's meaningless anyway. A brain is just a medium for input and output of information. The random molecular movement in a glass of water could just as easily reproduce the same output data according to a large enough algorithm and viola you have exactly the same thing. According to "some" algorithm, the glass of water on your desk momentarily is a brain that is "reading this post" in its own universe.

I haven't heard it stated that way before, but that also seems to be just as much of an epistemic issue as Boltzmann brains. Seems like you've made the problem even worse rather than fixing it.
