This seems like a bullshit story, but apparently this is what the NIH is claiming now. Do you think this is trustworthy information, or could it just be more right wing conspiracy theories that were somehow fed to NIH by a republican official trying to stoke conspiracy theories anti-Chinese sentiment?

This issue has become really politicized and a lot of right wingers like Rand Paul and Tucker Carlson have been pushing this narrative so hard, that other politicians are going to start trying to appease these voices, but I dont think their is any solid evidence that America was funding anything in Wuhan. Its a ridicluous fucking story that doesn't even make sense, but the Rand Pauls and Tusker Carlsons of the world will run with anything that supports their right wing narrative.

The problem is that Trump majorly fucked up his Covid-19 response and it's painfully obvious. More people died in the US than any country on Earth, even 3rd world countries like India had better covid responses than the US. There are countries like New Zealand and Taiwan that count their covid deaths in the dozens while we've reached almost 900,000 dead in the US. So they're desperately trying to pin the blame on anything other than Trump and the GOP for the disaster to keep their voters from falling apart. They already lost the 2020 election primarily because of Trump's covid response. People were mad as hell and despite all the efforts by the GOP to discredit mail in voting and pretend fraud people showed up in record numbers to keep them from any power so they could fuck us all up more than they already had.

So now they're trying to push the narrative that it must have been a lab leak or some sort of bioweapon by China and keep shoving word salad at voters hoping to confuse them by making it look like anybody's to blame but themselves. Pathetic.

The whole thing is a red herring by politicians to distract from their failures. The Wuhan Institute has been the premier researcher in coronaviruses for over a decade, they were the ones who first sequenced and uploaded the virus's genetic code for the international scientific community. In fact, they were the ones who years prior warned of a possible spillover from bat coronaviruses to human coronavirus. Money flows between institutions all the time. Is it connected to the military? Almost definitely. So is every Ivy League university, they get shit tons of money from DARPA. Universities and scientific institutes are near the heart of commercial, government and military social structures. Always has been.

But the idea that they created the pandemic is pretty stupid.

The probability and they accidentally released a virus that they were playing with... very probable.
RatG-13 is the closest thing to current corona: 96%
It was isolated from Yunnan bats in 2013.
No one knew about that strain until January 2020 in a paper by team leaser Shi Zhengli from Wuhan lab.

To add: Before 2020, the rules followed by virologists in China and elsewhere required that experiments with the SARS1 and MERS viruses be conducted in BSL3 conditions. But all other bat coronaviruses could be studied in BSL2, the next level down.

What I have read from Rutgers university virologist Richard Ebright though:
"It is clear that some or all of this work was being performed using a biosafety standard - biosafety level 2, the biosafety level of a standard US dentist’s office - that would pose an unacceptably high risk of infection of laboratory staff upon contact with a virus having the transmission properties of SARS-CoV-2..."

You could have picked a better subject to attack the WHO on. Perhaps you haven't looked at the original tweet and only saw some distorted signal gone through multiple passes. WHO may they suck at public messaging, but anyone on /sci/ should see how that is not a strong affirmation of there being no h2h transmission.

This is fundamentally not a scientific issue, it's an issue about trust. People lose faith in organizations like CDC and WHO when things they say are incorrect. While not entirely the scientists fault, many scientific organizations have piss poor public comms. I honestly believe if climate change was never made political many more people would be open minded about it. Also we need a discussion on trust and what it is. Think about the people you trust the most. For me, it's my parents and siblings. Yet I know they have lied to me in the past, but I still trust them. This lack of trust not only applies to science but to virtually all of the the government here in the US. How do we tackle this problem? What can organizations and governments do to rebuild trust? What can we do as a society to promote forgiveness?
