Consider current reality: everything about a modern urban center is offensive to all the senses: it stinks; it's so noisy that it gives you hearing damage and heart disease; the color scheme is a strange blend of grimey, dull grey, and a hodge-podge of aesthetically unrelated colors; the geometry that surrounds you is composed of crumbling concrete boxes, with the occasional piece of historical architecture that looks almost surreal in its anachronism, and maybe some "modern architecture" in the spirit of the grey concrete box, but boasting slightly more varied basic primitives. Such an environment should be intolerable for a species that came down from the trees only yesterday, and yet everyone is not commiting suicide. Instead, this environment selects for dull-sensed, dull-witted, self-absorbed, materialistic cattle brains that have no concept of beauty beyond what's socially programmed into them.
