Alternatively, if this universe emerges from some configuration of elements in an external reality, maybe we could change its inner workings if there is some phenomenon that can be triggered from inside, and causes a change in the constituent elements outside; to use the dreaded simulation analogy, it'd be like using an exploit to break out of a sandboxed environment and manipulate the host system.
