First, because we don't have an English board to direct filthy barbarians to. Second, because English is a terrible lingua franca for worldwide communication. Should have used something fully phonetic like a Romance language, or just Latin. We end up with hoards of non-native "speakers" that only partially understand English, all with their own native languages, all slowly butchering English. Not nearly as bad as something non-phonetic like Chinese, at least.
