Beta MAX was worse product than VHS. While it did have nominally 5% more lines, it had only 1h recording time (the original version meant to compete with VHS), meaning you couldn't fit a single movie on it, which is the entire point of buying a videotape recorder. That's the key reason why it failed. That VHS was better designed and therefore players were simpler and cheaper was a cherry on top.
Beta CAM was specialised thing for professional camera equipment, used different recording method, was much more expensive, you could fit only 30 minutes on a single cassette, but indeed had better quality. That's the one used by studios for decades.
Betamax and Betacam are not the same thing.
