I live in a street where everyone mows their lawns as short as possible, then water their short lawns, which can no longer help the ground retain its moisture, and then they apply weed killer to deal with all the plants which thrive in short lawn conditions. They use their leaf blowers every time regardless of how many leaves there are, rather than just mulching the litter into the ground. Then they neatly trim up the edges. Every week. Following that they get out their chainsaws to chop down the tree they planted five years ago, then jump into their SUV to drive down to the local garden center to buy a new tree to plant. They stagger it perfectly. Always something to chainsaw down every few weeks. I love the noise of amateurs with a chainsaw. A two minute job takes them half the day.
Every couple of years they replace their car with another model. So they can drive down to the local supermarket several times a day, even on a sunny warm day and even though its only a ten minute walk. There they buy lots of goods individually wrapped in plastics, they come home, unwrap the goods and dutifully put the waste in their recycling bin. Several different companies come around to pick the various stuff left out on the kerb. On Tuesday its the green waste ( all those lawn clippings ). Two different companies. Two different sets of trucks banging around. On Wednesday its the recycling. Again two different companies. Two more truck trips. On Thursday is the general household waste. This time there are three companies, so three trucks. And all of this is just fine with everyone. No one mentions it. Its just good. Very white middle class neighborhood.
I know this scene is repeated in many places.
tl;dr: we are doomed as a species
