This is how far they have to lower the standards because of the STEM push. Too many retards who don't have any interest in the subject. I've worked with people on projects in 400 level courses who didn't know what a fucking string was.

My first two years of school were OOP in C++ and C. I hated it but god does it make me feel superior to other people and honestly I think it explains why I hate modern development since we were encouraged to stay in the terminal and use VIM and other commands like gcc/valgrind to compile and debug. I kind of miss that shit

Any Turing-complete language can easily be translated into any other Turing-complete language, anon. Go learn FORTRAN or COBOL if you just like learning languages for the sake of knowing them.

Since there's a relatively wide spectrum of college starting languages here, what do you guys think is the best language for CS first-years? I'm the previous poster who started with C++/C but I think I'd pick Java, it's the most widespread language and is complicated enough to be interesting while also having great tooling for newbies.

Don't do CS anymore, its a waste of time and all /webdev/.
If you want to do CS like they did it back in the 80s and have that challenge, look into computational mathematics instead. Classes are still in C/C++
