To be honest, these variants have been around since the 19th century. It just seems to be confusion with or apprehension about using singular "they".

Unlike xir/xe or whatever the fuck, it actually makes sense linguistically (he/she, but without the gender), and would actually make sense in its original context, where you don't like "they", but you don't want to use "it" (describing a hypothetical space alien was an example given by the wiki article). So, just remove the different letters from the word, and keep the ones leftover.

And you have "generic personal pronoun" All the others just follow the form of "begin with the subject form, e". Why they credit Spivak with this is beyond me.

Why the gendered community of faggots ditched this in favor of xe/xir is also beyond me, unless we just assume they're mostly retarded, which is fair enough.
