There's also an ancient method of solving binary logarithms (which can be applied to any logarithm by converting it) invented by a dude with a long ass name. I can't remember enough to find it, but it was an iterative process that extracted the answer one bit at a time. Also look into analog computers. Many are drawn on paper. One example was used to optimize land leveling for road construction.
