How?

Obviously I didn't actually do this. But I'd like to know why shorting out circuits like this won't kill me or the electronics?

Multimeters are high impedance (i.e. they act almost like an open circuit) so almost no current flows through the meter.

Good meters will also have insulation rated for 1000V so you won't get shocked through the probes

I don't know if short is the right term. Just measure it in the right scale just to not blow up the fuse. It does happen
