Don't genetics and environmental influence disprove free will? You are what you are due to a combination of your genetics and how you were raised and what environment you were raised in. So there is no free will? The course of your life depends on your parents genetic makeup and their subsequent choices which were also influenced by their own parents genetic makeup and choices and etc. etc. etc.

We can imagine a world where this is not the case. As ridiculous as it would be, it's a logically coherent possible world where people would just pop into the world out of nowhere as full-formed adults with personality that doesn't come from previous stuff that happened in the universe. But really all that would boil down to that there's no explanation for why people are the way they are. Would that make anyone any more "free"? Conversely then, why would the fact that there's an explanation (genetics and environment) for why you are the way you are make you any less free?

Couldn't the reality they popped into existence in just have encoded a "back-story"? I mean, if they all have distinct personalities then surely they must have memories of experiences that make them the way they are, even if those are just illusory, they were something that that reality gave to them without their choice, if they didn't have memories of experiences then how could they have a personality at all?

A lot of personality and temperament is genetic and comes to other stuff than memory, for example something as simple as hormone levels. And a lot of experience that you have forgotten can still have influence on your personality. If you completely forgot the experience immediately then supposedly it wouldn't have much of an effect, but you could have a negative experience about something that makes you dislike it, eventually forgetting about the experience itself without your negative attitude fading away.

And the point about forgotten experiences having influence, is that it's conceivable to have an attitude towards something without remembering a reason for it. So conceivably (in the generous sense of the term), there need not be any reason at all, other than it being a brute fact about that person.
