I remember tripping up on this in my 1st year drafting class. Had to draw a part which had two intersecting holes running through it, thought I was tripping balls when I actually ran through the projections properly.

how many cylinders would it take to make a sphere? unlike picrel a cylinder has smooth curvature so it's not mathematically impossible

Clearly infinitely many. Every point on the surface has to be arbitrarily close to the surface of more than one of the cylinders. Not so clear whether countable or uncountable.

how would that even make sense?
I mean in my mind I can't imagine it with great accuracy in my mind, maybe it I drew it out, but I am certain that it is not a sphere.

So 3 plane projections doesnt define an object. Why engineers bother with blueprints as 3d cad models are the only way

build prints also specify a tolerance. The shape produced by 3 cylinders can be close enough to a sphere that there is no functional difference.

it's been 20 years.

i could do the first two steps, but when i tried to carve the last cylinder i'd always get a lot of broken geometry.

i had never thought this until now and doing it in my head I see a weird offcenter cross shape, youd need at least 6 cylinders for a good approximation
