But they had brought assumptions that air contaminants were more dangerous than water and ofcourse this was back before the scientific method but if your trying to design the very first experiment of its type you can easily introduce biases without realizing it like you think water looks clean so it probably is but even though the air looks clean you can smell that it isnt so the problem is likely in the air.
Science is great at answering questions but its like the game of twenty questions, the most important thing isnt the answers but the questions you choose to ask.
