They used to mean the same thing, but the language changed to be able to different between two different concepts that used to be (and are still being) equivocated.
Sex is a biological, scientific concept. It's about your physical body. It's mostly straightforward with only a few exceptions for humans (intersex people for example).
Gender is a social concept. It's about your role and how you are viewed in society. This is much more subjective and in my opinion outside the scope of science.
The way I understand it, a trans girl is as much of a girl as the colour pink is a girl colour. There might be nothing genetically female about a trans girl, but there's also nothing genetically female about the colour pink. The colour pink also doesn't have a uterus. That doesn't stop society to think of pink as a girl colour.
Sure, the role someone wants to take in society is highly correlated with their sex (just like the sexual orientation of someone is highly correlated with the opposite of their sex), but I don't see why it's a physical necessity that they HAVE to match.
