Actually now that I'm writing this, I realized I don't even watch popsci videos on Youtube anymore. It's not that I hate the content or the creators, most of them seem good people who just enjoy scientific topics and want to share them with others in an educational and entertaining way. Veritasium, Numberphile, Computerphile, 3B1B being the prime examples. But I think I've just grown tired of it, the whole format.
I know that the information contained in these videos is too small for me to actually understand the topic, I know I'll pretty much forget the video's content in a week, I'll just be entertained for a couple of minutes and then go for the next dopamine producer I can find. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but I think I'd just rather spend my time doing my research and reading books related to the topic if I find them interesting enough, instead of fooling myself by thinking I have actually learned something from these videos.
Another problem is how long the videos have become. I watched derek's 20 minute long video on reversing aging, and honestly I feel like I could have learned more by just reading Sinclair's book. Sure, it would take more than 20 minutes to read the whole thing, but 20 minutes of reading would have more content than the video.
Well, at least they serve to spark interest and make people look more deeply into the topics covered, so there's that. I don't know, maybe I'm just tired.
