The only way you'll know the Math Olympiad is a thing is if you A: take the highest level math in High School, and B: happen to get a teacher who REALLY likes math.
I did both, and he only mentioned it one time off-hand in a 5 second tangent before going back to teaching.
Of course I can't say that Iran isn't the same, but I can guarantee if I ask my entire extended family if they know what the MO is I'll get nothing but 'No.' for replies.
Also we're a small population, and most of that population only care about winter sports.
