There are what they call "superalloys" e.g. Inconel in metallurgy reference standards. Those have very specialized uses for space shuttles and such.
It's not easy to create a new class of purely metallic materials because there is a limited number of ways you can strengthen/harden them and they are trade-offs of each other

why is the commercial aviation industry still basing all of their airframe designs on the messerschmitt 262?
nazi germany created the me 262 more than 80 years ago, why hasn't the commercial aviation industry been able to come up with an improvement over nazi technology that is now nearly a century old?

I wouldn't say progress has slowed down. While we have stuck to the tube and wing design, they have drastically improved in safety, efficiency, and speed.
Blended wing design will take a long time and most of the current investment is still improving the old way. Blended wings will probably become a priority once we hit a limit with the tube and wing efficiency and increased environment constraints on aviation.

the boeing twin jets with a 35º wing sweep are only a few mph faster than the messerschmitt twin jet with a 35º wing sweep.

Call me an austist but I may have come up with a new type of hybrid airbreathing ramjet engine that could potentially allow dirt fucking cheap supersonic/hypersonic aircraft.

What I call a "Slamjet" combines a valveless pulsjet assembly inside a conventional ramjet assembly. The idea was that the engine would have two operating modes and eliminate the need for a mothership or external booster and thus allow for self-launching ramjet powered aircraft that could take off from a runway without external aid.

The valveless pulsjet assembly is a already a dirt simple propulsion concept and serves as the first operating mode that the aircraft uses to take off and accelerate to around mach 0.6. Once reaching that speed, the engine shuts off the pulsejet and switches to familiar ramjet combustion, from anywhere from mach 3 to mach 6.

My goal is to replace SR-71 style ram-bypass turbojets that are horribly complex, expensive, and maintenance thirsty and create potential for self launching mach 3+ aircraft that are essentially Cessna 172-tier in maintenance and operating cost.

Yes, I know pulsejets have absolute shit-tier specific impulse, but that's only to get the damn thing rolling.

Nonono, they're lightweight and strong, the Boeing 787 fuselage is made of composite material which makes it lighter. Composites are pretty based, although some fear that it's harder to control the material for fatigue and cracks, like you can with metal

so about three times the average cost of fuel, plus the price of fuel

the average operating cost of a standard issue 737 is $7000 hourly with a fuel burn of 750 gallons, about $3000 worth.

A major factor is ease of engine inspection and maintenance. Try repairing or replacing an engine that's 20ft off the ground at the ass-end of an airplane or buried at the end of an S-duct. Also engine failures are less catastrophic to structural elements and fuel tanks if they're hanging below the wing in a nacelle. Compare the Comet or Tu-16 to the 707.

Have a read about supercritical wings and the efficiency of modern turbofans before coming in here and bullshitting us that there's been no improvements since WW2.

Approaching high subsonic speeds you get increased drag and buffeting. For an airliner (where fuel efficiency is key to actually making any money from the flight) there's point going past M0.8 or so.

Improvements in reliability, flight controls, safety have made flying by far the safest form of transport. There's no comparison between a modern twinjet and a finicky Me-262 apart from superficial similarities.

Ease of manufacturing and general conservatism in avation. The teardrop shape of picrel is supposed to be very efficient, but you don't see many of these around compared to beechcrafts.

I fly a lot now and it always irks me that flight speeds for commercial flights have been the same for like 30 + years now.

Like why can we not get to NY from California in 3 hours instead of 6? Even 4 would be a huge improvement...

idk it just seems like an area (commercial flight speed/improvements) thats making 0 progress.

It’s possible that if relativity’s 3d printers are reliable enough they could do some amazingly complex designs in metal which would probably make it competitive with composites. Also, if 3d printed fuselages become a thing it would be possible to optimize the parts more. Currently for a longer or shorter variant the manufacturer will just add/remove some sections of the fuselage. With 3d printing you could make the optimal designed fuselage for each plane variant.
