I keep hearing everywhere that scientific and technological progress is getting exponentially faster, yet things today are only marginally different than, saying 2010, ie: only a marginal improvement.
So the question is, is technological progress really starting to speed up even more, or have things more or less stagnated?

No.
This idea originates from Kurzweil's "Law of Accelerating Returns", where he took Moore's law and stated that it actually applies to all technology.
It was never true. Only the number of transistors on a chip ever actually increased exponentially, and this increase in computing power was able to be applied to some other domains.

Exponentials look linear close up. If you choose a margin of 50 years rather than 10 you can see the exponential pattern more clearly.

That being said tho we have sort of stagnated, because it’s hard to get funding for a new invention when some shitty app that underpays people to deliver your groceries for you is guaranteed to make money and go public quickly.

The amount of software and hardware in the world has increased immensively since 2010. The amount of time people spent in virtual environments has probably tripled.

While not scientific progress per se, the change in the last 10 years in how we use technology has been massive.
