(1,1) is a disjoint union of (1,0) and (0,1), and of (2,0) and (0,2), and of (1,2) and (2,1), but that doesn't give a good way to handle the corners.
The first column and first row are also disjoint unions (moving down and left respectively), but the second column and second row aren't.
