The Divergence of the electric field of a capacitor

I was examining the differential form of Gauss’s Law for electric fields and of course it states that the divergence of the electric field is directly proportional to charge density. But what about the situation of a capacitor? Between the plates the field has uniform magnitude and so the divergence is zero. How does my dumbass make sense of this?
