Most people cannot find adequate answers on their own, and if they do they can often not be used to justify a religious set of morals. So people invent a new set: Hedonism and narcissism. It makes more sense when you have one chance in life on an Earth that seems so unfair.
I'm a nationalist for the same reason. Taking pride in your race and nation is fucking pathetic, but what else is there to be proud in when you're an unmarried 30 year old truck driver with a beer belly? Seems like that job could be done in just about any nation. Give the "worthless" pride in their nation and suddenly they have a reason to care.
