Is there any real benefit to humanity from deserts or is it just wasted land?

Could we convert them to habitable places, preferably with their own sustainable sources of water?

I strongly believe the entirety of humanity should move to the Sahara to lessen our impact on other ecosystems. With desalination, solar and modern farming and building techniques, it should be quite possible.
