It shows a single lineage rather than a tree, and doesn't show anything about selection based on traits (color, in this example) nor how speciation usually has a geographic border of some kind to separate populations. That pic is showing that, as a consequence of slow changes over time, the original red letters would no longer be able to mate with their distant blue offspring, but would have some ability to interbreed in the purple or near-purple range.
