but buzz matters. seriously, having a media presence can seriously impact things like whether you get a job or get chances to collaborate with the other stars in the field. these factors can be a game changer on whether or not you can realize your scientific potential.
my point is that it is sad but true that the media creates buzz that influences these things. and if the media has a bias—or more to the point, if the media is activist in promoting one group that is underrepresented but sidelines a second underrepresented group, then it just doesn’t make sense. either the media should 1) not be activist and report on science in proportion to how important it is or 2) if they want to trumpet social justice things like “more women in STEM” then they should do their part to not disproportionately favor women (who happen to be the majority of people in the world) while completely ignoring black me n
