/sci/, what do you really think about modern day ECT?

How does getting the 'treatment' impact intelligence (memory, language, thinking), personality, and other aspects of behavior?

Roger the seizure part, but just how damaging are the types of seizures induced in ECT compared to your regular naturally occurring seizures?

Less damaging because they are shorter and don't run the risk of hypoxia or head injuries from falling over.
ECT probably does have a minor effect on long term cognition but in nearly every case it will be smaller than the cognitive impact of untreated severe depression.
It significantly impacts short term memory for the duration of the treatment. You're not supposed to sign documents or make any major life decisions during a treatment course because you might not remember them.

Without the muscle relaxants given, ECT induced seizures have the capability to create bodily spasms that are powerful enough to potentially break the spinal cord during convulsion.

I had ECT. It’s pretty good but it wears off after a few months. Have some memory gaps. My brain seems to work fine otherwise.
