If they are trying to use too many big words I get suspicious and think it's an act.
Brevity can be a good indicator. If you understand the topic, it's fun to reverse-engineer their reason for phrasing something a certain way (how they try to avoid inconsistency with other ideas while they try to do a precise attack on a certain idea).
I basically just look for people who value consistency and understand the rules of logic and will acknowledge/identify faults in logic and valid counter examples/arguments.
If somebody understands the rules of the game, that's a good start. How well they play the game will reveal their true power-level.
My eyes glaze over when people try to use fancy language just to blurt out their taste preferences.
