People have argued that it is warranted because the fields are branching away from each other at relatively fast rate. In the 30-40s all the top theoretical physicists know each other and can fit into small classroom. In 2020 a conference on theoretical physics can have thousands of attendance and hundreds of sessions ranging from quantum computer to astronomy to nuclear physics. Thus it is warranted to give more prize per year, for each branches of the physics discipline.
