That's ideally how it works, anyway. There's a variety of monoclonal treatments available, and they should be started ASAP in a person who is at risk. If the disease progresses too far, the injected antibodies may not be significant enough to prevent further disease progression.

it’s the kind of treatment that directly acts on the virus, as opposed to stimulating an immune response. that means it does not give long-term immunity and can be overcome by a large exposure to the virus, or even multiple small exposures.

the actual vaccines OTOH prime the immune system so that an effective immune response is mounted by the natural immune system. this is important against a virus that is known to replicate rapidly in humans whose immune systems are relatively slow to mount a response to a virus they are not acquainted with.

tldr; antibodies are not as good of a treatment as priming an effective immune response before it’s too late

Antibodies are proteins which bind to specific targets (antigens). Monoclonal means you're working with a single specific antibody instead of variety of different ones with different targets.

Monoclonal antibody treatments have found use in a number of circumstances especially for things such as autoimmune, asthma, eczema, cancer treatment and fighting off some infections.

That said, a lot of people (including the news media) mistake "monoclonal antibodies" with "convalescent plasma," while they mean two different things.

I'd also add that most monoclonal antibodies on the market actually don't target microorganisms. They target inflammatory cytokines (like IL-6, which is implicated in a lot of the lung damage done during a COVID infection). Most or all of the damage done to lung tissue during COVID is from the immune system's reaction to the virus rather than the virus itself.
