It won't offend them, they get stuff like that all the time. If it does offend them, then you probably want to steer clear of them anyway. Beware that some labs are genuinely pretty toxic, and I mean probably like a good 20%. Toxic as in people screaming at each other and no hope of a rec letter. (I'm assuming you're an undergrad)

I'm looking at PhD programs and trying to learn a bit more about my topic of interest (specific enough that it could dox my if I mentioned it). I'm mostly just really happy that there are professors out there who are cool enough to spend some time talking to some kid like me who might not even make it through admissions. Some scientists out there actually care about the future, corny as that sounds.
