His grasp of English is bizarre. Like he can speak fluently but he sometimes uses words in a context that makes him seem inappropriate, like he doesn't fully understand.
One of the other professors recently retired, and he said - "It is pitiful that Dr. X retired...but I am sure there is someone else that can do what he did."
Which sounds like he is mocking him for retiring, as though it was weakness.
Clearly he meant "pitiable" but he does this kind of thing all the time.
