Usually when I sleep I do see vivid dreams, especially when I got older (28 now). However, before I was depressed and my dreams were a bit less vivid every night, I did sometimes sleep without dreams.
Sleeping without dreaming is still a separate state. I may not realize the moment I succumb to it, but I still wake up with at least some vague sense that time has passed, maybe I even was floating in darkness a bit.
With anesthesia it's like this
