Though a bioinformatician still uses statistics in their day-to-day work, a dedicated biostatician typically has a much stronger formal statistical background. The distinction between bioinformaticians, biostaticians, and mathematical biologists can become quite murky and it's more of a buzzword bingo than a real discrimination between fields.
