Cal spent half a decade trying to discredit the API discovery and successfully lobbied the American Physical Society to remove the designation, at which point UC coincidentally came up with their own method of production and took credit for the discovery themselves. Note that only the University of California performed the discrediting experiment and it was not verified anywhere else. Nevertheless, UC had a reputation and API did not, so UC won out despite taking a decade longer to isolate it.
