Well Maskelyn was an astronomer, he was also the leader of the board that decided on giving the award, and he also wanted to win it using his own method of calculating the longitude with the moon's relation to the stars

I like Gemini the program, Gemini the network protocol, and all the fun stuff they wanted to do with it (Rogallo wing landing, MOL, Big G). All I see here is that you took a screenshot of a render of a modern telescope (which I agree is complicated and each part has a specific function and needs to be calibrated and is thus expensive) but unless you can explain to me WHY it is like this you are just an assumer and I am sticking to my opinion that you could absolutely build a 9m tube telescope and have essentially off-the-shelf computers running data analysis after light enters the tube, lenses, and hits some sort of detector

A scientifically useful space telescope needs its mirror to be polished within a wavelength of the spectrum its designed to measure. It also needs to be dimensionally stable against both mechanical loads and temperatures. Now you need to point it at what you want pictures of, with almost no drift, and it needs to keep working with this same precision for years and years on end.

They recognize its potential for carrying the telescopes but not of Starship as the telescope platform itself, I think the JWST/LUVOIR design is more optimized anyways for that function

What is the difference between Goddard's rockets and Starship? A shit load of technology and performance.

If you tried to supersize a Galileo telescope it would be shit. Lenses have chromatic aberration and you would never hit the diffraction limit with all the distortion. So you need a reflector. You also cannot launch Galileo and his hands and eyes, so you need cameras and a guidance and pointing system. For Hubble that is an extremely complicated piece of equipment. You also didn't build a huge telescope to take shitty images, so you add more instruments which can do more things. Having a range cameras and spectrographs opens up different wavelengths and more science. Then you need power, data storage, communications, a computer. Some instruments will need cooling. If you want to get the most out of the imaging performance of the telescope it needs to be carefully thermally controlled to limit expansion.

Fair enough. A telescope does reduce to a tube and mirrors, but making those tube and mirrors worth a damn is an exercise in frustrating complexity growth. I wouldn't count SpaceX out from figuring out a way to make a respectable telescope that's simpler, if not as exotic and high performance, than the current accepted practices can deliver, and at a much lower cost.

They can only offer so much internet bandwidth for a given surface area, and that bandwidth per area number is going to be the same everywhere except polar regions. India's population density means that their starlink can only be available to a small fraction of their population, so the equilibrium price goes way up. Starlink is not the solution to giving internet to poor countries with high population density, it's only for areas for low population density.

Anyone can throw mirrors into a tube. Making those mirrors and tube do something useful (function as a telescope at all) is harder. Making that tube and mirror useful for groundbreaking science (requisite levels of precision in dimensions and across a temperature gradient) is much harder still. Putting that mirror into space and making it keep pointing where you want it to point with no ground to rest on, again, makes it even harder.

Best depends on what you want to do. There are lots of roles which are incompatible with that design, (e.g. x-rays). And it's overkill if you want to do a smaller mission, where you don't need folding. Survey missions like Euclid and WIFRST don't need the complexity. If JWST is not successful I think people will abandon it for a while.

Starship will likely not have the pointing stability for a telescope. The Shuttle did not, it required an independent mount with stabilisation. And yeah, if you add a massive spacecraft on the end it's not a tube and a mirror anymore.

Interferometry is very hard at visible wavelengths. You can't just record the data and combine it in a computer like for radio telescopes. The light has to be relayed to a central instrument and combined, the paths between the telescopes have to be matched to a fraction of the wavelength of the light. The technology to do it at optical wavelengths hasn't been demonstrated yet. And even if you could build an interferometer they come with other drawbacks (small field of view, insensitive to big objects). There was a lot of money spent on space interferometry in the early 2000's, but then SIM was cancelled after costs ballooned and it all got dumped.

ESA are studying a exo-earth finding interferometer again, called LIFE. Still decades away, but there is a lot of tech to develop.

My guess would be yes. Falcon cores do a reentry burn to minimize atmospheric heating on the way in and they only make it a few hundred km downrange before landing on a droneship. A Starship covering the 15000km between the US and Australia would be in a much higher energy trajectory.

You can make a telescope far, far larger, and for dirt cheap. Build a parabolic frame and rotate it. Fill it with a very thin layer of liquid metal (mercury, gallium etc.). Boom, a giant very cheap mirror!
The canucks built a giant 6 meter diameter one for $1m.
You can put em in earth, in space, on other planets/moons etc.

The cheapest telescope is probably a space based twirling pair of liquid telescopes.

The bigger your ship is the smaller the craters and boulders are in relation. A gravel drive is an obstacle course for an insect but it's nice and flat to a larger animal.

Worst case scenario you can always land a smaller vehicle, perhaps robotic, to prepare a landing site for the larger Starship. I've always liked the idea of using ALPACA to drop off a little robotic bulldozer like the converted lunar rover they used at Chernobyl to prepare a landing site.
Once you've landed the first Starship and started the base construction then you can prepare a more permanent solid landing pad for future landings.

The dozer would have it's own power source. Doesn't have to be ALPACA I just always thought that would be a cool use for it since it lands so low to the ground. You could remove the pressure vessel and just have the rover slung underneath kind of like a big skycrane but with legs.

That would never happen. One of their harshest weaknesses was computer tech, even in the 80s. Buran/Energia was much less tech heavy so they'd probably uprate the engines, make the boosters flyback, and unfuck the tiles.

They're completely full of shit. Glideback boosters are just big drone airplanes, and those are a much simpler control problem. The only challenge with glideback boosters is the mass budget, but that's just inert mass that doesn't require much in the way of onboard computers.

It’s like if you have 2 water-filled bowls. There’s string attached to the rim of the bowl — looks like an old school Lady Justice’s scales kinda. As you’re motionless each bowl is hanging below your hands. You can gradually spin and the centripetal force will hold the water in the bowl even though it’s on its side. Additionally, you’d also need to spin the strings so the water in them forma a parabola. That’s the “twirling pair” way for a space based liquid telescope to work. If you want you could add more than 2 telescopes to the setup. You could also have just 1 telescope and a counterweight on the other side. If you want to have the telescope rotate slower you can make the tether longer.

Earth based telescopes have the same limits- can only see your target part of the time. I think you could make many of these twirling pairs slightly out of sync (or just a few but with tons of telescopes all attached) to get a constant picture of an object of interest.
Interestingly, you could have 2 primary customers who’d be able to watch their objects continuously. Then you could sell the rest of the telescope time to other researchers who want to see whatever ring connects the primary 2 customers objects.

The biggest advantage of liquid telescopes is their cost— the mirror is 1% what a glass mirror costs. And i imagine if you mass produced these they’d get really really cheap. Also, transporting the mirror is weight constrained but not volume or g force constrained- just bring a big tank of mercury, it doesn’t care if it has a rough ride to orbit. The parabolic cradle doesn’t need to be absolutely perfect like for a glass telescope because the liquid will magically fill the voids. And the tether can also be made cheap (steel cable). So the expensive parts are the basically just the camera(s) and station keeping thrusters/gyros.

Earth based telescopes do not have the same limits. With a conventional telescope you can track a target for many hours in a single night and do long exposure, not so with a liquid mirror telescope. LMTs can only observe along their axis. You are limited to doing a shitty drift scan imaging survey, you cannot realistically do spectroscopy because you need longer exposures. You can forget doing interesting things like exoplanets because you have to point at the star, direct imaging also requires incredible precision.

It didn't. But the astronauts (who at the time were still predominantly former armed forces pilots) got butthurt about the idea of being made irrelevant, so the shuttle was always pilot-operated.

There's not much point in a cubesat telescope for amateurs. You only gain resolution going to space if your telescope is bigger than ~20 cm. If all you want to do is take pretty pictures there's no point. Also amateurs will tell you how complicated it is to get a good imaging rig set up, much less one you cannot touch again.

There have been several attempts to put together an amateur space telescope project, they have all collapsed so far.

Building more telescopes instead of more instruments per telescope is not going to save you money. There is only one Hubble because there are lots of different wavebands in astronomy, and further niches in those. It doesn't make sense to build redundant capability until you can improve significantly. There are many space telescopes. Some do one specialised things, others are multi-purpose.

You'd be wrong, the proposal cycle is 1 year and there is mid-cycle and directors discretionary time.

All good telescopes are oversubscribed. If you build 10 more, the pressure would be just as high because people would start to ask for more time. Hubble is especially tight because US astronomers can get grants if they are successful.

Possibly, but I think it's rather unlikely. Some people think finding super early galaxies would cause problems, but the problem is that the ages you infer are based on assuming cosmology. So you never find an impossibly far galaxy. It could measure an "early" with an old stellar population, but those techniques aren't very precise. It will contribute to measuring the expansion of the universe locally, there has been some tension between different measurements. It's not going to revolutionise that field, but it may offer improvements. It could be nothing or it could be evidence of a problem with cosmology.

JWST is a big deal for galaxy formation and evolution, less so fundamental cosmology. Change is probably more like to come from cosmological experiments like Euclid, Roman, DESI (pic related) and so on.

White dwarfs have been ruled out as a significant contrition to dark matter. Compact objects cool were the first explanation for dark matter, coming from Zwicky who coined the term in the the 30s. In the late 80's a way to search for dark compact objects was devised using microlensing. Foreground dark bodies would occasionally lense background stars, you just had to watch a lot of stars. Huge surveys were conducted, and the result was only a tiny number of candiate events. The vast majority of dark matter cannot be made up by objects like white dwarfs and stellar black holes.

Also white dwarfs are composed of normal matter, and cosmology indicates that there is nowhere near enough baryons to explain all of dark matter. Two probes which constrain the density of normal matter are the fusion in the early universe and the fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background. Both tests are probing times before stars, before galaxies, no white dwarfs. The CMB shows that even at 300,000 years dark matter was in place, not behaving like the normal matter.

Maybe one could imagine rewriting cosmology to get around the later constraints, but there's no guarantee it is possible. The microlensing constrain is just simple physics, it's not going away.

yes, they at T-19s there was a fault with a ground system (Doppler radar) which aborted the countdown. Probably easy to fix, but they haven't set a date for the next attempt yet.

Does the expanding universe affect orbits within a galaxy? People just say that gravity is stronger than the expansion force at these scales and that's why galaxies and our solar system doesn't expand, but there sure must be some effect of the expanding universe on orbits within a galaxy, even a small force adds up over time.

Talking about stretching space is kind of a simplification. The full physics of GR is considerably more complicated. It's not simply that all distances expand, that's just a useful mental picture like the Bohr atom. Even if there was a force it would be very small on the scale of galaxies.
