This is the shell after molting. When the astronaut grows too large they have to leave the old suit and grow a new one. While astronauts may not die of old age they can get so large that they cant pry themselves out of a suit, when this happens the larval stage astronaut called taikonauts will often feast on the corpse greatly advancing their development.
