>>13697134The most common explanations are those that say that faces are constructed, and that they have been created by society.
To a lesser extent, I believe that most of the faces we see on the television and the newspaper are not really faces, but caricatures, that have been created for effect and not to be interpreted on a deeper level.
We can make a living out of caricatures. However, if it isn't really an honest representation of the individual's real face, then it has no value. But the thing is, faces can be more real than other aspects of human beings. Just check some of the great works of the past. The paintings of Munch, the drawings of Rembrandt, they're still living on, aren't they?
Faces have been a part of art from the beginning of time. The great ancient paintings we see in museums are great because they show us people. We can see these faces, we can see the eyes, the hair, the beard, and we can read their story.
We, as Westerners, are very used to seeing faces, probably even more so than the East, that is why we usually accept the faces we see as real.
However, I think that the faces we see on television, the newspapers, magazines and on our streets are artificial, that is why we can detect the artifice.
We have a tendency to see the faces we want to see, and not the faces we are supposed to see.
