In the past year we have seen several examples of seemingly unstoppable technologies that have gained mindshare and public attention, not to mention the fact that we have seen multiple companies with their own dedicated “singularity” products.
Yet, despite this trend, there is still a significant amount of skepticism, as well as a considerable amount of discussion around this concept in general.
However, as I started doing more research on what the technology would be able to do, it became apparent that a lot of people have a completely different point of view.
And that’s because it is not really about making it happen.
The Singularity is defined as the point where a new form of humanity, or a post-human civilization, exists, and it is beyond the control of any of us. It’s the end of human history, and that is actually exactly why some people see it as a problem.
That’s right. It’s the end of the human race as we know it, and that is a cause for concern.
Even if a post-human civilization does not come into existence, a lot of the issues are still around if a super-intelligent system gets created that will never be able to interact with us in a meaningful way, with the same level of respect we give to our human and non-human animals.
