If you're talking about math problem solving then yes, there are some books discussing strategies and methods to improve.
What about "The Art and Craft of Problem Solving - Paul - Zeitz" and "Problem solving strategies - Arthur Engel"?
However, to improve in any field you should just practice constantly. The discouraging thing is that there are always people that improve way faster than you but that's ok.

People do this in cooking all the time, where you might use different ingredients - a different oil/fat, a different meat, a different vegetable but they all serve the same 'function' taste and balance wise.
It's also fundamentally what you're doing when you transpose a melody from one instrument to another or even say from a rock quartet to a string quartet or to a jazz trio, bass is bass but where does the lead guitar go?
